Make use of willing players for in-game team balancing

Instead of the common approach towards keeping teams balanced during a match by forcibly moving someone onto the other team, I suggest trying to find those players who are willing to switch teams to keep the game balanced.

For example, rather than forcing a player that player could be presented with a prompt asking if he or she wants to switch, maybe for a few points. If the system can rank how well players will balance the teams then they can be asked in order, either individually or in small groups (obviously the first to agree in the group would be the only one switched). Only if all responses are negative will the system have to revert to forcing someone.

I posted this in the thread on the FM forums, but I'd also like to expand on the 'for a few points' idea and have it record how many times you've been asked to switch and agreed to do so. It could be kept on your player stats page as "sportsman points" and people could brag about how sportsmanlike they are.

Yongedevil's idea is of course genius as he has written it, but I'd like to see real reward for accepting. Otherwise it will be too annoying to have it pop up in a firefight.

...Speaking of which, perhaps the prompt should only appear to dead players.

Perhaps it should not be a pop up with mouse click options, but a HUD message, with a keybind for accept/deny - this would be far less intrusive (similar to map change votes for other games)

+1, and the idea of offering "a few points" for sportsmanlike conduct and switching to keep the balance is a GREAT idea. It's something that has little incentive (other than your own morality/feel goodness) - and this would be a very minor addition that would greatly encourage more fair play :)

The game suggesting to players that they switch teams to balance the game, and rewarding those who do are both very good ideas. We'll keep them in mind when planning how to improve autobalance.

Could there be a side balancing event after each map change? It could use the stats from the previous maps for "per player level" (because we all have bad days and good days) and newcomers would be on the "zero" level?

+1 for good K/D ratio (over 1.5)
-1 for bad K/D ratio (under 0.9)
0 for unknown (between 0.9 to 1.5)

then just change the sides so it would be around 0 per team. Thou this could break up some friends who like to team play...

Maybe even this could be and extra info on the starting screen (where you choose your side) there'd be like a "team-o-balance"-meter which told that MMC has the advantage and ISA is on the receiving end. (Thou it could show just by how much like, - 5 for the ISA because they have new players who haven t killed that much in the previous rounds and died alot and MMC has +3 because all claners decided to play in the same team. Just don't know would this communicate the balance to everyone).
This would at least offer some glimpse for how balanced the teams were (by some degree of skill calculation).

I don't like this idea. Not only would it be hard to do, but it would get to be a tad bit annoying.

Improving autobalance is on the to do list. I marked this idea "under consideration" even though we'll do what we can on the server side first before making client updates (which the original idea requires).

If possible, scan the list for similar clan tags and try not to break them up. One game I play automatically puts all the people on one clan into a team together.

This can lead to pretty badly stacked teams. Public servers aren't the best place for clans to practice in.

Yeah, nobody likes playing on a public server where nearly half the team are all close buddies. 99% of the time this is a prime indicator of an extremely stacked team.

Agree re: not automatically putting clanmates on the same team. If they want to make the decision to play on the same team they can use their own judgement to determine if it's fair or not. But automatically putting them together is just asking for 'team stacking' complaints.

Not to mention the fact that I might be actively prevented from jumping on the other team if I wanted to shoot up a friend a few times.

I feel like asking people if they want to switch won't do much, as they may just ignore the pop up. Of course, you wouldn't take control away from them to have them say whether or not. My solution to this would be:
1. have a countdown, say, 30 seconds, and if the player does not select an option, they are automatically switched.
2. Have an option in the settings "auto team switch" which you set to yes or no, default yes.

Of course, this gives the players the option to choose whether or not they want to switch, and often they do not want to switch. Perhaps an autobalance server option that just balances automatically (similar to TF2)?

In March 2012 Futuremark Games Studio was acquired by Rovio Entertainment (creator of Angry Birds).

Futuremark will continue to offer limited customer support for Shattered Horizon, Hungribles and Unstoppable Gorg, but no new games, sequels, DLC or ports to other platforms are planned. As a result we are changing the status of this suggestion from "under consideration" to "not planned".

Building great communities was always one of the aims of the studio, so on behalf of the team I would like to thank everyone who enthusiastically shared their ideas and suggestions here on our support site.
